About
Burrito Masala was started by chefs Prasad Varma and Ramona Varma-Hernandez. Both Prasad and Ramona are James Beard award-winning chefs. Prasad grew up as a boy in southern India and immigrated to the United States when he was 18. Prasad learned to cook from his mother and grandmother who taught him in the specialites of Kerala. After moving to the United States, Prasad attended culinary schools and worked in some of the finest restaurants on the west coast. Prasad met Ramona while working as a chef in San Francisco. He loved Ramonas passion for cooking and the union was meant to be. Ramona grew up in Mexico City and was also taught the fine art of mexican cooking from her family. Ramona immigrated to the United States when she was 14 and moved to Los Angeles with her family. After highschool, Ramona enrolled at her local culinary institute and became a chef at a local restaurant in Los Angeles when she was only 22. Ramona siezed upon an opportunity to become the head chef at a restaurant in the bay area and moved there when she was 25. This is where she met Prasad and they've been cooking together ever since. After getting married, Prasad and Ramona decided to there were more abundant opportunities in the Portland area and they relocated to take advantage of the vibrant and exploding food scene.
